Lady Day: A Moment for Leaders to Reset and Realign

Did you know that New Year’s Day wasn’t always celebrated on 1 January in England? For nearly six centuries, the year began on 25 March, a day known as Lady Day or the Feast of the Annunciation.

This significant date marked not only the start of the legal year but also carried deep religious, agricultural, and socio-economic meaning. It was one of the pivotal days in the Ritual Year calendar, shaping the rhythm and tone of the year ahead.

Today is Lady Day, a festival rooted in both history and renewal. Traditionally observed on March 25th, Lady Day marks the Feast of the Annunciation, but also once signified the start of the year in England—a time for new beginnings, reflection, and fresh contracts with the land and community.

Today could be a time to pause and to Rethink Leadership. I see Lady Day as more than a historical marker; it’s an invitation for modern leaders to pause, reconnect with their purpose, and plant some seeds. But then I do see everyday like that! I'm just reminding you of moments whne you too can pause and sometimes an event calendr can provide the inspration.

Here are three rituals inspired by Lady Day to help leaders stay connected and at their best:

🌱 Reflect and Recalibrate: Take time today to reflect on what is emerging in your leadership journey. What are you being called to nurture—within yourself, your team, or your community?

🌱 Create Conscious Beginnings: Like the farmers of old who aligned their planting with Lady Day, consider what fresh commitments you can make. Is there a project, relationship, or intention that needs a mindful restart?

🌱 Embody Ubuntu: Lady Day reminds us that leadership is collective. Where can you foster deeper connection, embracing the Ubuntu spirit—"I am because we are"—to elevate those around you?

As leaders, when we consciously align with these seasonal rhythms, we lead not just with our minds, but with heart and presence.

✨ How are you marking this shift? What ritual could support your leadership right now? ✨

On the Collecive Ascent Programme we look at ways in which you can connect deeper ito who you are being as a Leader. Next programme starts on May 20th.
